Prof. Dr. Sofie Royer Discusses Hate Speech Legislation on De Afspraak
Following the conviction of former MP Dries Van Langenhove for incitement to hatred, Professor of Human Rights Sofie Royer appeared on De Afspraak to discuss the boundaries of hate speech laws.
During the broadcast, Prof. Royer debated the issue with lawyer Walter Van Steenbrugge. While Van Steenbrugge argued that current laws are vital for protecting human rights and cannot be weakened under European treaties, Prof. Royer noted that international frameworks actually leave member states "room for interpretation" regarding how strictly they punish incitement to hatred versus protecting free speech.
Prof. Royer emphasized that she finds the speech in question reprehensible, but warned that criminal convictions can be counterproductive, leading to increased public polarization and offering controversial figures a massive media platform.
