Aleydis Nissen has published an article in Human Rights Quarterly examining the right to access sport for all in Europe.
The article shows that the connection between sport and health is relatively recent in human-rights discourse. Historically, access to sport has been linked primarily to the rights to culture, education and leisure. It argues that, although realising this right requires meaningful investment, inaction carries greater costs as health challenges grow across Europe.
Aleydis, an affiliated postdoctoral researcher at FRC, is also developing a tracker on sport, physical activity and physical education in the work of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The project forms part of the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport.
